COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Virginia won seven out of 10 bouts on its way to a 26-11 win over Maryland Saturday afternoon at Comcast Pavilion. Maryland’s Jerry Afari, Jason Kiessling and Charlie Pinto picked up wins for the Terps.

The win was Virginia’s first in the ACC this season and snapped a five-match losing streak. The Cavs moved to 5-11 overall (1-4 ACC), while the Terps dropped to 3-13-1 and 0-5 in the conference.

With the match starting at 149, Virginia took an early 8-0 lead with a decision at 149 and a technical fall at 157. Paul Dunstan tallied three takedowns in the first period against Andrew Schlaffer and was able to hold for the 9-5 win, while Paul Bjorlo scored his 16-0 technical fall over Matt Rothstein after two periods.

Kiessling managed his second major decision of the weekend with a 13-3 win over Jim Hartey at 165 pounds. He scored three nearfall points in the third period to help secure the four-point major decision for the Terps.

The Cavaliers’ Rocco Caponi and Chudi Uraih each earned decisions at 174 and 184 pounds, but Afari managed to hold off Scott Smith at 197 pounds for the Terp victory. Afari registered a takedown in the first and the second periods and amassed over two minutes of riding time, which ended up being the decisive point in his 6-5 victory.

After a Maryland forfeit at heavyweight, Virginia’s Anthony Burke (125) and Byron Dunlap (133) secured the dual victory with decisions. Pinto closed the dual out for Maryland with his second major decision of the weekend, a 15-7 win over Chet Naylor. Pinto will head into next weekend’s ACC Tournament on an eight-match winning streak and a 10-2 record since January. Pinto also led Maryland in the dual season contributing 34 points for the Terps. Pinto’s only loss in conference action came to North Carolina’s Isaiah Britton on January 8.

The 52nd ACC Championships will be held in Greensboro, N.C., next Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
