CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The University of Virginia softball team bounced back from an 8-3 loss to Kent State with a 4-1 win over host Charlotte Sunday (February 20) at Phillips Field to finish second in the Holiday Inn Green & White tournament. UVa was 2-2 in the tourney to finish second and now stands at 4-5 on the season.

In their first game of the day, the Cavaliers dropped an 8-3 decision to Kent State, who won the tourney with a 3-0 mark. After Virginia scored one run in the top of the first, Kent State responded with five runs in the bottom half of the first inning to take a commanding 5-1 lead. UVa scored a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to make the score 6-3, but Kent State answered with single tallies in the bottom half of the next two innings to make the final score 8-3.

Third-year third baseman Sara Larquier (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) drove in Virginia’s first run with a single in the top of the first, while third-year center fielder Jessica Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Academy) registered a two-run double in the fifth inning.

First-year pitcher Whitney Holstun (Escondido, Calif./Escondido) suffered the loss on the mound as she allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits in one-third of an inning while falling to 2-2 on the season. Third-year Erin Horn (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon) pitched the final 5.2 innings and gave up three runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and seven walks.

Second-year Coty Tolar (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter) recorded her second victory in as many days with a complete-game 4-1 win over Charlotte (3-6) in the second-place game of the tournament. Tolar allowed just one unearned run while scattering five hits in improving to 2-0 on the season.

UVa wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as second-year second baseman Elea Crockett (Tucson, Ariz./University) scored on a 49er fielding error in the top of the first inning. The Cavaliers broke the game open with three runs in the top of the third inning. Larquier hits two-run single that scored Crockett and Taylor and fourth-year catcher Jenn Wynn (Herndon, Va./Herndon) then doubled to center field to score Larquier. Charlotte broke up Tolar’s shutout bid with an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Larquier had three hits and three RBI in the two games, while Taylor had three hits and a pair of runs batted in. Crockett scored three runs.

Virginia returns to action February 25-27 when it competes in the Frost Classic in Chattanooga, Tenn. UVa opens the tournament on Friday (February 25) with a 12:15 p.m. contest against Kentucky. The Cavaliers also play Bowling Green at 2:30 p.m. Friday.
