CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia third-year tennis player Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.) was named ACC Tennis Player of the Week conference officials announced on Monday. Cohen helped the No. 9 Cavaliers defeat three top ten opponents this week en route to the finals of the 2005 USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Chicago.

In Virginia’s opening round win over No. 7 Stanford on Thursday, Cohen team with Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.) for a win at No. 3 doubles to clinch the doubles point. Then in singles, Cohen topped Eric McKean at No. 6 singles in straight sets. On Friday, the Cavaliers defeated No. 2 UCLA, the highest ranked opponent Virginia had ever defeated. In that match, Cohen and Stewart won at No. 3 doubles and Cohen posted a win over Mathieu Dehaine at No. 6 singles to clinch the 4-2 win. In Saturday’s semifinal win over No. 6 Ole Miss, Cohen and Stewart once again won at No. 3 doubles to help the Cavaliers win the doubles point. On Sunday, as the Cavaliers fell to No. 1 Baylor, Cohen rallied for a three set win over Vladimir Portnov at No. 6 singles. For the week, Cohen had a 6-1 combined singles and doubles record and remains undefeated in dual match singles matches this season.

The honor is the first of Cohen’s career and the second time a Cavalier has been honored this year. Two weeks ago, Stewart earned ACC Player of the Week honors.

Virginia (8-1) returns home this Friday, February 25, with its ACC Opener vs. Virginia Tech at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. Time of the match is 6:30 p.m.
