Virginia Moves up to Second at Papa John's Collegiate

MIAMI, Fla. – The Virginia women’s golf team moved into second place after the second round of the Papa John’s Collegiate on Monday.
Host Miami continues to lead the field of 12 teams with a 595 (+19). The Cavaliers shot a 301 (+13) for the second straight day, finishing with a 602 (+26) after 36 holes. UNC Wilmington follows by a stroke with a 603 (+27). Mississippi State, which shot the day’s best round of 294 (+6), is fourth with a 607 (+31)
Mississippi State’s Beth Irwin fired a two-under 70 on the day to take the lead with a 145 (+1) overall. Miami’s Hagen Weintraub and Josie Shinn, and UNC Wilmington’s Michelle Jarman are tied for second with a 146 (+2) each.
The young Cavaliers have all five players listed in the Top 25. Sophomore Leah Wigger (Louisville, Ky.) fired an even 72 to stand seventh with a 149 (+5). Sophomore Lindsay Robinson (Huntington, W.V.) is tied for 10th with a 151 (+7), while sophomores Sally Shonk (Noblesville, Ind.) and Rachel Smith (Powell, Tenn.) are tied for 19th with a 153 (+9) each. Freshman Lauren Mielbrecht (Gulf Stream, Va.) rounds out the scoring with a 154 (+10) to tie for 23rd.
Final round action at the Papa John’s Collegiate tees off on Tuesday, Feb. 22.
