Charlottesville, Va. – Twelve different players scored in a balanced offensive effort to lift the Virginia men’s lacrosse team to an 18-2 win over Manhattan this afternoon at the UHall Turf Field. The Cavaliers improve to 2-0 on the season in the first meeting ever against the Jaspers, playing their first game of the year.

The 16-goal margin is Virginia’s largest since a 21-3 win over Butler in 2002, while the two goals are the fewest the Cavaliers have allowed since a 10-2 win over two years ago.

Virginia’s Kyle Dixon opened the scoring with an extra-man goal less than four minutes in. J.J. Morrissey scored off the ensuing faceoff as the homestanding Cavaliers rushed to an early 2-0 lead. John Christmas scored his first goal of the year late in the first quarter. Hunter Kass, Ben Rubeor, Brendan Gill and Drew Thompson scored in the second quarter as UVa built a 7-0 halftime lead.

Bud Petit made the first start of his career in goal for the Cavaliers and turned back three of the seven shots he faced in the first half. Kip Turner, last week’s starter, got the nod in the second half and finished with four saves.

The Cavaliers scored the first seven goals of the second half to run their lead to 14-0 early in the fourth quarter. Matt Ward tallied three of the seven goals to extend his string of multi-goal games to seven. Ward finished the game with four points (3g, 1a) to become the 36th player in school history with at least 100 career points; he is tied for 34th in UVa history with 102 points.

Attackman Justin Otto and midfielder Greg Lewis scored back-to-back goals in the fourth quarter for Manhattan’s scores.

Virginia head coach Dom Starsia substituted liberally in the fourth quarter as all 35 players in uniform played. Drew Garrison, Ryan Kelly and Jack Riley all scored the first goals of their career in the final quarter; Riley finished with two goals.

Jack deVilliers won 12 of 15 faceoffs, in the second-best performance of his career. Overall, the Cavaliers took 19 of 24 draws. The Cavaliers also held big advantages in ground balls (55-34) and shots (53-22).

Justin Henry made the first start of his career between the pipes for the Jaspers and made nine saves in the first half before giving way to senior John Landers after halftime. Landers made five saves.

The Cavaliers return to action Monday (Feb. 28) at home against Denver at 3 pm. The Pioneers upset UVa 9-7 last year in Denver.
