FORT WORTH, Texas – The No. 2 ranked Virginia men’s tennis team opened its four match spring break tour of Texas with a 6-1 win Friday afternoon over No. 23 TCU. The Cavaliers swept the doubles and took five of six singles matches as they were victorious in their first outdoor match of the season.

Virginia (11-1) opened the match strong by sweeping the doubles for a 1-0 lead. Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.) and Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.) posted a win at No. 3 doubles over Jacopo Tezza and Radu Barbu. The No. 23 ranked team of Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) and Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) clinched the point with an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles over Jordan Freitas and Jacob Martin. Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Nick Meythaler (Owensboro, Ky.) completed the sweep, as they upset No. 13 ranked Fabrizio Sestini and Rafael Abreu 9-8 at No. 1 doubles.

In singles, the Cavaliers increased the lead to 2-0 when Devvarman cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Freitas. Huey made the score 3-0 when he completed a 6-3, 6-1 win over Barbu at No. 4 singles. Cohen then clinched the match with his 6-3, 6-4 win over Martin at No. 6 singles. TCU (5-2) got their lone point at No. 1 singles, where No. 22 ranked Sestini upset No. 7 ranked Stewart at No. 1 singles. The Cavaliers closed out the match with wins on the final two courts. Rizza topped Tezza 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles and Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) downed Abreu 6-2, 7-5 at No. 5 singles.

“I thought we played well for our first outdoor match of the season,” said Virginia head coach Brian Boland. “We came ready to play today against a good TCU team. I am proud of the focus and effort our team showed today.”

The Cavaliers will return to action on Sunday, March 6 as they continue their four-match Texas swing with a match at No. 1 Baylor (11-0). The match will be a rematch of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championship final two weeks earlier. Baylor won that match 4-1, handing Virginia their only loss of the season.
