Poutier Leads The Way As Virginia Shuts Out Longwood, 8-0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia baseball team posted an 8-0 shutout victory over the visiting Longwood Lancers in a non-conference game at Davenport Field at the UVa Baseball Stadium. Virginia’s starting pitcher Robert Poutier recorded his first collegiate victory and pitched a complete game shutout as he struck out a game-high eight batters and scattered six hits and teammate Brandon Guyer went 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and scored a run to lead UVa to its fifth shutout victory this season.
“Today was a great win for us after coming off the Wake Forest series. It was great to get back out here and compete again,” said UVa head baseball coach Brian O’Connor. “Robert Poutier did a tremendous job in his first college win and threw a complete game shutout. He pitched very well this past weekend at Wake Forest and against here today. He’s really starting to come into his own and really pitching some good baseball.”
The Cavaliers took an early 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning when Ryan Zimmerman connected on a two-out double before scoring one batter later on an RBI-single by Guyer. UVa extended its lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the third inning when the first three batters that stepped to the plate posted a hit and scored a run. Matt Street led off the side with a single before he stole second base and scored in Virginia’s next at-bat on an RBI-single by Zimmerman (his 21st RBI of the season). Leading 2-0, UVa doubled its lead to 4-0 with one swing of the bat when Guyer crushed a two-run home run to left-center field to drive in Zimmerman. Guyer’s home run was his second of the year.
The Cavaliers extended their lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning and added another run when Tim Henry reached base on an error and scored later in the inning on a second Lancer error. Virginia pushed its advantage to 6-0 in the bottom on the sixth inning when Mike Campagna singled to lead off the side before Henry drove him in two batters later with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Leading 6-0, the Cavaliers made it an 8-0 contest in the bottom of the eighth inning when Campagna singled and scored on an RBI-double down the right field line by Kyle Werman before Werman scored a run himself one batter later on an RBI-single by Henry.
Poutier (1-0) has now thrown 18.0 innings this season and has not allowed a run this year while striking out 12 batters. Poutier’s complete game shutout today marked the first time a Cavalier accomplished the feat since Matt Avery threw a complete game shutout on June 6, 2004 against Princeton in the NCAA Regionals.
Longwood starting pitcher Clay Horn (0-5) took the loss after going just 2.0 innings and allowed four runs on five hits and struck out one batters.
With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 9-6 overall. The loss drops Longwood’s record to 4-14 on the season.
The Cavaliers will return to home action when Virginia hosts the James Madison Duke in a non-conference game. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 PM at Davenport Field at the UVa Baseball Stadium.
