Cavaliers Fall to Penn State 10-7
March 11, 2005
The top-ranked Cavalier women’s lacrosse team fell 10-7 on Friday (March 11) to #10 Penn State in a game played at Klockner Stadium. The Cavaliers (2-1) were led by Ginger Miles, who had 10 saves in the effort, while at the other end of the field, Tyler Leachman notched her third consecutive hat trick. Penn State (4-0) was led by Lee Tortorelli, who had seven saves, and Emily Chambers, who had four draw controls and a goal.
Penn State jumped on the board first as Jessi Lieb fed Lori Havrilla for a goal 1:56 into the game. Virginia won the ensuing draw and took it upfield but State gained possession on an errant shot. As the Lions attempted a clear, Ashleigh Hass caused a turnover and picked up the loose ball in the arc. She took it in and scored, tying the game just under a minute later.
Virginia went up five minutes later as Ashley Dodson blocked a shot and picked up the loose ball the Virginia defensive arc. The Cavaliers cleared the ball and got off a shot that sailed wide. Leachman picked up the ball and rolled the crease, scoring to give the Cavaliers the 2-1 lead at 7:06. Penn State answered with a quickstick goal from Lindsay Dutch off a feed by Shari Maslin. Maslin rolled the crease just over a minute later to give the Lions the lead again at 12:10.
The Cavaliers tied the game again as Leachman won the draw and wove her way through the arc, scoring a minute after Maslin to knot the score at 3-3. Penn State then scored a pair of goals, one by Karen Long and one by Emily Chambers, in a span of 1:36 to take the 5-3 lead. They extended it to 6-3 on a second goal by Long and two minutes later made it 7-3 as Kristen Burke finished a pass from Lieb at 27:18.
Miles made a save on the next PSU possession and Nikki Lieb scooped up the ground ball to start the transition. At the other end, Kim Connors was fouled as she drove to the cage, setting up an 8m free position. On the restart, she fed Kate Breslin, who scored at 28:10 to pull the Cavaliers within three at 7-4. Penn State won the draw and held for a final shot, getting it as Lieb fed Dutch for a goal with four seconds remaining in the period, giving State an 8-4 lead at the break.
Virginia opened the scoring in the second half as Elizabeth Pinney caused a turnover in the arc and Molly Urlock scooped up the ground ball. On the break, Connors fed the ball ahead to Leachman, who scored her third goal of the game at 35:14 to pull the Cavaliers within three. Maslin answered off a feed from Burke four minutes later to push the margin back to four at 9-5 with 20:17 to play.
Penn State won the draw but Urlock picked up an errant pass and Virginia brought the ball forward where Amy Appelt rolled the crease and scored with 18:18 to play, pulling the Cavaliers within three again at 9-6. The Cavaliers surrendered only their second 8meter free position of the evening-and their fourth of the year-and Dutch converted it at 51:55 to push the margin back to four at 10-6.
Dodson gained possession for the Cavaliers on an errant overthrow and got the ball to Breslin at the top of the arc, where she drew a shooting space foul. On the restart, she fed Chasney on the goal circle, who scored at 54:32 to pull the Cavaliers within three again. Penn State’s Dutch, however, won the draw and the Lions held on until the final seconds when the Cavaliers gained possession and ran a fast break where a last second shot was saved by Tortorelli.
The Cavalier defense was again incredibly disciplined, allowing only two eight-meter free position shots and nine fouls in all. The Cavalier defenders have surrendered only five 8-meter free position shots in three games in 2005.
The loss is the Cavaliers’ first in 13 games dating back to 2004 and the first to the Nittany Lions since 1996. Virginia returns to action on Sunday, March 13 as they take on in-state rival Richmond. Game time against the Spiders is 1:00 pm.
