WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The third ranked Virginia men’s tennis team remained undefeated in the ACC with a 6-1 win over No. 25 Wake Forest Sunday afternoon at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center. The win improves the Cavaliers’ record to 16-2 on the season (4-0 ACC) while the Demon Deacons fall to 11-4 (3-2 ACC).

The Cavaliers opened the match strong by taking the doubles point for a 1-0 lead. Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.) and Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.) won 8-3 at No. 3 doubles over Derrick Spice and Joe Bates. Wake drew even when Todd Paul and Marius Adamski defeated Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) and Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) 8-6 at No. 2 doubles. The No. 41 ranked team of Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Nick Meythaler (Owensboro, Ky.) then clinched the point with an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles over Brett Ross and Andrew Hamar.

In singles, the Cavalier advantage was quickly extended to 2-0 as Cohen cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Charles Sartor at No. 6 singles. Huey defeated No. 79 ranked Hamar 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 singles to make the score 3-0. The Deacons got on the board when Spice upset Stewart 7-6, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Minutes later, Devvarman clinched the dual match as he topped Ross 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) increased the advantage to 5-1 as he completed a 6-2, 7-5 win over Adamski at No. 5 singles. No. 56 ranked Rizza then downed No. 82 ranked Paul in three sets to complete the 6-1 win.

“I was pleased with our play on the trip this weekend,” said Virginia head coach Brian Boland. “We showed a lot of focus and continue to improve with each match. Wake is a very good team and I am pleased with the result.”

The Cavaliers will return to action on Thursday, March 31 as they host William & Mary at the Snyder Tennis Center. Match time is 3:30 p.m.
