REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – The University of Virginia women’s rowing team won its second varsity eight competition against the University of California in the final day of the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic on Sunday (April 10). Virginia rowers also competed in the varsity eight event but lost to California in that competition. UVa entered the races against California after defeating Washington and UCLA in both the first and second varsity eight events on Saturday (April 9). The regatta was held on the 2,000 meter Redwood Shores course in Redwood City, Calif.

In the second varsity eight competition, Virginia’s boat led the entire race, winning the event in a time of 6:37.71. California, who went undefeated against Wisconsin and Clemson in Saturday’s competition, finished the race in 6:45.07.

The Virginia women in the second varsity eight boat were coxswain Launa Forehand, Catelyn Coyle, Crystal MacLeod, Libby McCann, Andria Haneman, Heather Gardner, Sara Lippa, Katie Yrazabal, and Chrissie Monaghan.

In the varsity eight competition, fifth-ranked California established and maintained an early lead, winning the event in 6:25.57. The ninth-ranked Cavaliers finished the race in 6:29.91.

The Virginia rowers comprising the varsity eight boat included coxswain Katie Hilton, Carolyn McMillan, Ashley Jones, Beth Clark, Mary Dobmeier, Margaret Matia, Kerry Maher, Yvonne Epp, and Melanie Kok.

Virginia returns to action on Saturday (April 16) when the team hosts Oregon State at the Rivanna Reservoir. The regatta is UVa’s final home competition of the spring season.
