NEW LONDON, N.C.- – The Virginia men’s golf team is tied for fourth after the first round of play at the 52nd Annual ACC Championship on Friday.
Ninth-ranked Duke fired a 292 (+4) to lead the field of 10 squads through the very windy weather conditions. Third-ranked Georgia Tech follows by one stroke with a 293 (+5). Florida State is third with a 297 (+9). The Cavaliers and NC State are tied for fourth with a 299 (+11) each. Defending champion Clemson is sixth with a 300 (+12).
Duke’s Ryan Blaum is the individual leader with a four-under 68. Virginia junior Brad Tilley (Chappaqua, N.Y.) is second with a two-under 70. Three players are tied for third with a one-under 71 apiece.
“Obviously, the team was carried by the play of Brad and Kevin,” head coach Bowen Sargent said. “Brad had an outstanding round. We really played strong in the last three holes with a four-under (as a team), which were difficult holes for most teams. Those holes were the difference.”
Senior Kevin O’Connell (Potomac, Md.) is tied for seventh with a 73 (+1). Junior Carter Henderson (Nashville, Tenn.) and sophomore Daniel McGurk (Woodlands, Texas) are tied for 32nd with a 78 (+6) each. Freshman Greg Carlin (Kensington, Md.) shot an 82 (+10).
Second round action of the 2005 ACC Championship tees off on Saturday, April 16 at 8:30 a.m. at the Old North State Club in New London, N.C.
