CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The No. 29 Virginia women’s golf team moved into third place after the second round of competition at the 17th Annual ACC Championship on Saturday.

Top-ranked and defending champion Duke leads the field of eight squads by 34 strokes with a 594 (+18). The No. 15 Wake Forest Demon Deacons are second with a 628 (+52), while the Cavaliers follow by three strokes with a 631 (+55). The No. 27 NC State Wolfpack is fourth with a 633 (+57).

“Once again, the conditions were difficult,” UVa head coach Jan Mann said of the continuing strong winds. “The girls played well. It’s a true championship course, a challenging course. They’ve stayed patient and hung in there. Hopefully they’ll do the same tomorrow.”

Duke players hold the top four spots individually, led by Anna Grzebien’s and Elizabeth Janangelo’s 148 (+4). Two Blue Devils follow with a 149 (+5) apiece. Miami’s Tina Miller is fifth with a 153 (+9).

Sophomore Leah Wigger (Louisville, Ky.) leads UVa with 156 (+12) for ninth place. Freshman Lauren Mielbrecht (Gulf Stream, Va.) is tied for 13th with a 158 (+14), while sophomore Sally Shonk (Noblesville, Ind.) is tied for 19th with a 160 (+16). Sophomore Rachel Smith (Powell, Tenn.) is tied for 22nd with a 161 (+17), while sophomore Lindsay Robinson (Huntington, W.V.) rounded out the CavaliersâÂ?TM scoring with a 165 (+22).

Final round action of the 2005 ACC Championship tees off on Sunday, April 17 at 8 a.m. at the Carmel Country Club in Charlotte, N.C.
