CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 72 ranked Virginia women’s tennis team closed out the 2005 regular season with a 6-1 win over No. 64 NC State Sunday afternoon at the Snyder Tennis Center. The win improved the Cavaliers’ record to 6-14 on the season (2-8 ACC) and snapped a six match losing streak.

The Cavaliers took an early lead by winning the doubles point. Kristen James (Clifton, Va.) and Lori Stern (Ojai, Calif.) picked up a win at No. 2 doubles over Virginia Romero and Elin Stahl Johansson. After the Wolfpack (9-13, 1-9) had drawn even with a win at No. 3 doubles, the team of Douglas Wink (Greensboro, N.C.) and Rachel DelPriore (Williamsville, N.Y.) clinched the point with an 8-5 win over Barbara Orlay and Julia Roach at No. 1 doubles.

In singles, Virginia picked up two quick wins to increase the lead to 3-0. DelPriore cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Stahl Johansson at No. 3 singles and James downed Romero 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. After NC State had cut the lead to 3-1 with a win at the No. 1 position, Stern clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Roach at No. 4 singles. Lindsey Pereira (Arlington, Texas) and Caroline Hammond (Williamsburg, Va.) then closed out the match with wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles respectively.

“I was pleased with the result today so this team can be rewarded for their hard work and positive attitude throughout this tough season,” said Virginia head coach Phil Rogers. “NC State fought hard today but all six of our players stepped up and played well today and I am proud of them.”

The Cavaliers will return to action next week as they travel to Cary, N.C. for the ACC Tournament. Virginia will open play on Thursday against a first-round opponent to be determined.
