CLEMSON, S.C. – The Virginia Cavaliers (25-13, 6-10 ACC) recorded a 9-2 victory over the Clemson Tigers (21-14, 11-4) in the third and final contest of a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. UVa received a solid outing by starting pitcher Jeff Kamrath and benefited from key and timely hitting throughout the lineup to salvage the final game of the series against the Tigers. Clemson won the series two games to one after the Tigers posted a 13-4 victory on Friday and a 3-2 win on Saturday in games one and two, respectively.

In the top of the second inning, Virginia took a 2-0 lead by scoring a pair of runs. The Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead when Sean Doolittle launched a towering solo home run to right field. Doolittle’s home run was his team-leading eighth of the season. After Brandon Guyer was hit by a pitch in UVa’s next at-bat, he scored a run three batters later when Mike Campagna dropped a RBI-single to shallow right-center field to make it a 2-0 ballgame.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Cavaliers stretched their lead to 3-0 when Guyer reached base again without getting a hit and made the Tigers pay by scoring another run. Guyer walked to reach base and as he stole second base, the throw from Clemson catcher Adrian Casanova bounced off his helmet. The ball then rolled into left-center field as Guyer jumped to his feet and scored a run to make it 3-0.

UVa took a 5-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning by scoring a pair of runs. After Matt Street and Ryan Zimmerman connected on back-to-back singles to lead off the side, Doolittle’s groundout to second drove in Street to make it 4-0. Three batters with the bases loaded and one out, Matt Bernstine grounded out to shortstop to plate Zimmerman to make it 5-0. Bernstine’s RBI was his first as a Cavalier.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Clemson got on the scoreboard and cut Virginia’s lead to 5-1 when Casanova doubled down the right field to lead off the side before he scored a run two batters later on a double play groundout by Brad Chalk.

But UVa answered right back with a run of its own in the top of the seventh inning and took a 6-1 lead when Kyle Werman tripled to lead off the side and scored a run two batters later on a sacrifice fly to center field by Street.

The Tigers came back and added a run in the bottom of the seventh inning and made it a 6-2 contest. After Tyler Colvin singled and Kris Harvey was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second, Andy D’Alessio singled through the left side two batters later to drive in Colvin to pull the Tigers to within four runs of the Cavaliers through seven complete.

However, in the top of the ninth inning, Virginia tacked on three runs and increased its lead to 9-2. After Campagna and Werman led off the side with back-to-back singles, Henry advanced them each one base with a sacrifice bunt. Then, the UVa trio of Street, Zimmerman and Doolittle connected on three consecutive RBI-singles to drive in Campagna, Werman and Street to give the Cavaliers a seven-run advantage at 9-2.

UVa starting pitcher Jeff Kamrath (6-3) picked up the win after he went 6.0 innings and allowed two runs on five hits and struck out two batters. Relievers Sean Doolittle and Casey Lambert closed out the game.

Clemson starting pitcher Robert Rohrbaugh (4-2) took the loss after going 5.2 innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits and struck out six batters.

With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 25-13 overall, 6-10 in the ACC. The loss drops Clemson’s record to 21-14 overall, 11-4 in the conference. The Tigers won the series two games to one.

Virginia will return to action on Wednesday, April 20th when the Cavaliers host the Longwood Lancers in a non-conference game. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM at Davenport Field at the UVa Baseball Stadium. Virginia defeated Longwood earlier this season when the Cavaliers posted an 8-0 shutout over the Lancers on March 8th in Charlottesville.
