Virginia’s Billie-Jo Grant won the discus competition as her second throw of the day was the longest of the afternoon, and Kellen Blassingame and David Sullivan smashed their own school records to help the Virginia men take fourth at the ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships which were held in Tallahassee today (April 23). UVa first-year Alex Tatu took home the silver in both the 800 and 1500m runs, just nipping teammate McGavock Dunbar by .05 in the 800 as the Cavaliers finished the competition with 81.5 points, their highest finish in four years. Erin Crawford set the school record in the 400 hurdles en route to the bronze.

Blassingame improved his 400m record by .16 as he took second in the 400m, just hours before he took third in the 200m with a personal-best 21.24, which moved him to the #4 spot all-time in UVa history. Sullivan improved his pole vault record by six inches, vaulting 17′ 6.5″ and taking second overall, just missing the title on missed jumps. Greg Blair took 8th with his 15’3″.

Tatu took second in the 1500m with his 3:49.78 in the first individual running event of the day and came back in the afternoon to earn his second runner-up finish, going 1:51.02 in the 800 and just beating teammate Dunbar, who took third with his 1:51.07. Jordan Orr was eighth in the 800, coming in at 1:52.78, making the Cavaliers the only team with three scorers in the men’s 800m. Reuben Jones took eighth in the 100m with his 10.90, while Isi Azeke took sixth in the 110 hurdles with a 14.50.

Grant scored in both the shot and discus in her first ACC championships, and she won the discus with her 174′ 1″ (53.07m), which she launched on her second throw of the day. Crawford’s 57.06 just bests the 57.11 run by Angela Lee in 1997 and earned her third. The women’s 1600m relay team finished third in 3:40.01 and qualified for the NCAA Regional meet.

Other scorers for the Cavaliers included Ashley Gore in the 400m (8th, 56.01), Shannon Hawrylo in the 1500m (4:28.09, 6th), Rachel Marks in the high jump (6th, 5′ 7.25″), and Tomika Ferguson in the triple jump (8th, 40′ 4″).
