Virginia Ties For Second at Cavalier Classic

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – William & Mary captured the team title at the 18th Cavalier Classic on Sunday afternoon at the University of Virginia’s Birdwood Golf Course.
The Tribe, which stood third after the first two rounds, fired the best round of the day through very windy conditions with a 300 to finish with an 892 (+28). Following by one stroke to tie for second were host Virginia (Orange) and NC State with a 893 (+29) each. Maryland took fourth with a 910 (+46), while the Cavalier Blue squad was fifth with a 613 (+37).
“It was a tough day, similar to yesterday’s second round,” UVa head coach Bowen Sargent said. “I thought we did a little better job today. I think our guys did a good job.”
Just like last year, medalist honors were determined by a playoff. William & Mary’s Gary Barton and NC State’s Taylor Crosby each finished with a 218 (+2), but Barton emerged from the sudden death showdown as the individual victor.
“The wind kicked up for most of the round,” said Barton following his last tourney as a graduating senior. “It was just a matter of survival. I knew the conditions were going to lead to many low scores. I knew that if I kept it around par, I would have a pretty good chance.”
Furman’s Rob Langley, NC State’s Jerry Richardson, and Virginia’s (Blue) Dan Gabel (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) tied for third with a 219 (+3) apiece.
Junior Brad Tilley (Chappaqua, N.Y.) paced UVa Orange with a 220 (+4) to finish sixth. Freshman Greg Carlin (Kensington, Md.) followed at seventh with a 223 (+7), while senior Kevin O’Connell (Potomac, Md.) tied for 15th with a 229 (+13). Junior Carter Henderson (Nashville, Tenn.) carded a 231 (+15), and sophomore Daniel McGurk (Woodlands, Texas) finished with a 233 (+17).
For the Virginia Blue squad, following Gabel’s third place-finish, junior John Fizer (Trenton, N.J.) tied for 15th with a 229 (+13), while sophomore Mark Perry (Atlanta, Ga.) shot a 234 (+18). Junior Craig Cook-Stevenson (Sutton-Coldfield, England) followed with a 237 (+21). Sophomore William Byrd III (Richmond, Va.) finished with a 250 (+34). Playing as an individual, freshman Lee Yang (Malaysia) shot a 237 (+21).
Virginia now awaits an invitation to the 2005 NCAA Men’s Golf Regional on May 19-21. The tournament field will be announced on Monday, May 9.
