Robinson, Wigger Named Academic All-Americans
Aug. 1, 2005
CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – University of Virginia golfers Lindsay Robinson (Huntington, W. Va.) and Leah Wigger (Louisville, Ky.) have been named to the 2005 All-American Scholar Team, the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) announced.
The honor is the second for both golfers as they each received the recognition from NGCA in 2004 following their freshman campaigns.
Recognized with this prestigious honor were 199 women’s collegiate golfers from Division I. The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in collegiate athletics. The minimum cumulative grade-point average (GPA) is 3.50, and student-athletes mush have competed in at least 66 percent of the college’s regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.
Robinson fired a 326 at the NCAA National Championship, helping the Cavaliers to a 13th-place showing in their first-ever national tourney appearance. An Academic All-ACC honoree, she carded a 233 at the NCAA East Regional, helping UVa advance to the national championship. Robinson tied her career-low of 74 in the final round. At the 2005 ACC Championship, she finished 27th with a 244 (+28). Robinson averaged 79.528 while playing in 10 tournaments.
Wigger earned NGCA Honorable Mention All-American in 2005. Also a two-time All-ACC honoree, Wigger was named Virginia’s Golfer of the Year. She was UVa’s top finisher in 10 of 11 tournaments, recording eight Top 10 finishes in her UVa career. While helping the Cavaliers to their first-ever NCAA appearance, Wigger finished second at the NCAA National Championship. She finished with a 287 (+3), one stroke out of first place, for the best finish in her two-year collegiate career. Wigger averaged a team-best 73.08 in the fall and 74.12 for the year.
As a team, women’s golf sported the highest team GPA of UVa’s 25 sports for the 2004-05 academic year with a 3.36.
Robinson and Wigger will begin their junior seasons on Sept. 12 as Virginia opens the 2005-06 season at the Cougar Fall Classic in Charleston, S.C.
