Pacific Palisades, Calif. – University of Virginia men’s tennis player Eric Riley (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) won the singles championship last week at the ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit West Region tournament at the Riviera Tennis Club. Riley, seeded second in the tournament, won four of his five matches in straight sets to capture the title.

Riley won his first two matches in straight sets over unseeded opponents before needing a third set superbreaker to defeat Brandon Harris of Goucher College in the quarterfinals. Riley then defeated Scott Blumenkranz of Brown 6-0, 6-2 in the semifinals and Trevor Dobson 6-4, 6-4 in the finals.

Riley became the second Cavalier to win an ITA Summer Circuit event this year as Jarrett Chirico (Sarasota, Fla.) won two events on the East Region circuit.

“I have been working hard all summer and playing a lot of tournaments,” said Riley. “This week, I played well and I have a lot of confidence coming into the fall.”

The ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit is made up of six regional circuits (East, Southeast, Midwest, Central, Southwest and West) for collegiate. Each region consists of four consecutive tournaments played during the month of July before a national tournament held in August. Each tournament consists of a men’s singles and doubles and women’s singles and doubles draw.
