CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia volleyball team opens its 2005 season by competing in the 2005 Texas A&M/McDonald’s Invitational September 2-3 at the G. Rollie White Coliseum in College Station, Texas. The Cavaliers will face a pair of nationally-ranked teams in the tournament.

Virginia opens the season against Lehigh on Friday (September 2) at 5:30 p.m. (ET) and then plays a pair of nationally-ranked teams on Saturday (September 3). UVa faces 23rd-ranked St. Mary’s (Calif.) at 11:00 a.m. and wraps up the tourney by playing host and 16th-ranked Texas A&M at 5:30 p.m.

The Cavaliers, under the direction of 11th-year head coach Melissa Aldrich Shelton, finished the 2004 season with a 19-11 overall record and an 8-8 mark in the ACC. UVa returns six starters and 10 letterwinners in 2005.

Virginia was selected to finish third in the Atlantic Coast Conference according to the 2005 Preseason ACC Volleyball Poll, which is determined by a vote of the league’s 12 head coaches. Second-year outside hitter Sarah Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla./Plant) and second-year libero Melissa Caldwell (Houston, Texas/Stratford) were named to the 18-member ACC Volleyball Preseason All-ACC Team in early August.

The Cavaliers open the home portion of their 2005 schedule September 16-17 when they host the 2005 Fairfield Inn Jefferson Cup Volleyball Tournament at Memorial Gym. UVa hosts Appalachian State at 7:00 p.m. on September 16 and Liberty and Albany on September 17 at 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., respectively. Admission to all home Virginia volleyball matches is free of charge.
