CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The University of Virginia volleyball team received a balanced offensive attack with five players registering eight or more kills in a 3-0 (30-26, 30-28, 30-23) victory over Boston College Saturday evening (November 5) at Power Gym. With the victory, UVa improves to 16-9 overall and are in third place in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings with an 11-5 record. The Eagles fall to 7-18 overall and 2-14 in the ACC.

Third-year outside hitter Lindsay Osco (Houston, Texas/Elkins) led all players with 11 kills in the match. She also added five digs. Second-year outside hitter Sarah Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla./Plant) and second-year middle Katie Oakes (Lorton, Va./Evangel Christian School) both notched 10 kills. Kirkwood reached double digits in kills for the 24th consecutive match and also had 12 digs for her eighth double-double of the season. She also tallied a pair of service aces to raise her season total to 55, which ties for ninth on UVa’s single season kills list. Oakes also led all players with five blocks.

Second-year outside hitter Beth Shelton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursula Academy) led all players with a .429 hitting percentage as she connected on nine kills on 21 attempts with no errors. She also added seven digs and an ace. First-year middle Shannon Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) posted eight kills in the match. Third-year setter Emily Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla./Plant) turned in an excellent performance with 39 assists, five digs, three blocks, two service aces and two kills. Second-year libero Melissa Caldwell (Houston, Texas/Stratford) topped the Cavaliers with 16 digs, while third-year outside hitter Emily Perilli (Thompson’s Station, Tenn./Page) added 15 digs and a match-high three service aces.

Kelsey Johnson led Boston College with nine kills, while Alison Shepp had seven kills. Verena Rost recorded a double-double with 20 assists and 13 digs. Allison Anderson led all players with 20 digs, while Dorota Niemczewska added 13 digs.

Virginia hit .157 in the match with 51 kills, but held the Eagles to .088 hitting with only 40 kills. Boston College held a 9-6 edge in team blocks as well as a 67-63 advantage in digs. UVa led in service aces 9-3.

UVa tallied 18 kills, including four each by Shelton, Osco and Sarah Kirkwood, in a 30-26 win in the first game. The Cavaliers took game two 30-28 with Osco netting six kills, including the game-winner. Virginia trailed 25-19, but used a 9-1 run to grab a 28-26 advantage. Eight of nine of UVa’s points during the run came via kills. The Cavaliers held BC to a -.050 hitting percentage in a 30-23 win in the third and final game. Oakes had four kills in the game, while Perilli registered two of her three service aces.

Virginia returns to action on Friday (November 11) when it hosts Florida State at 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Gym.
