Virginia Finishes Fourth at The Derby Invitational

AUBURN, Ala. – The Virginia women’s golf team finished fourth of 17 teams at The Derby Invitational on Sunday.
Host Auburn fired a two-under 286 in the final round to win the team title and knock off top-ranked Duke by one stroke. The Tigers finished with an 879 (+15), while the Blue Devils finished with an 880 (+16). Georgia was third with an 893 (+28). The Cavaliers shot a 290 on the day, tying the school record for their lowest round, for an 893 (+29) total.
Individually, Auburn’s Maria Martinez fired a four-under 68 in the final round to earn medalist honors with a seven-under 209. Tennessee’s Nicole Smith and Alabama’s Jenny Suh tied for second with a 218 (+2) each.
Sophomore Lauren Mielbrecht (Gulf Stream, Fla.) paced the Cavaliers with her fourth consecutive Top 10 finish. She shot a two-under 70 in the final round for a 220 (+4) total. Junior Lindsay Robinson (Huntington, W.V.) fired a career-low, one-under 71 to tie for 21st with a 226 (+10), her season-best finish. Juniors Rachel Smith (Powell, Tenn.) and Leah Wigger (Louisville, Ky.) followed by one stroke to tie for 24th with a 227 (+11) each. Freshman Carly Truitt (Marysville, Ohio) rounded out the UVa scoring with a 231 (+15).
The Cavaliers resume action in the spring, traveling to the Papa John’s Collegiate in Coral Gables, Fla., on Feb. 19-21.
