CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia women’s basketball team rolled to a 74-56 win over Wright State in its home opener on Sunday at University Hall.

The Cavaliers improved to 2-0 on the season, while the Raiders fell to 0-1.

In the first half, Virginia jumped out a 16-0 lead to start the contest. UVa held a 20-point lead at halftime, 42-22.

“I really don’t like to start that way,” head coach Debbie Ryan said of the 16-point start. “It gives teams a false sense of security. It just took (Wright State) a while to get started.”

In the second half, UVa retained its double-digit lead, going ahead by as many as 25 points, 60-35.

For the second straight game, UVa had four players in double figures. Sophomore Takisha Granberry (Charlotte, N.C.) scored a career-high 16 points, while freshman Lyndra Littles (Washington, D.C.) came off the bench for her first career double-double of 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds in just her second game. Junior Siedah Williams (Cleveland, Ohio) added 13 points, while senior Tiffany Sardin (Chicago, Ill.) chipped in 12 points and eight boards.

“That’s the beauty of our team; the spotlight isn’t on one person,” Williams said of the balanced scoring effort. “We can all score.”

Brittney Whiteside led WSU with 15 points. Tyanda Hammock added 13 points.

Overall, Virginia out-rebounded Wright State, 38-34. The Cavaliers shot 46 percent from the field and 67 percent from the free throw line.

Virginia travels to St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, for the 2005 Paradise Jam. UVa takes on Alabama on Friday, Nov. 25 at 2 p.m. AST. On Saturday, Nov. 26, the Third Place game is slated for 2 p.m. AST with the Championship to follow at 4:30 p.m. AST. WINA Radio (1070 AM) will broadcast both of the Cavaliers’ tourney games. (Note: The Virgin Islands are in the Atlantic time zone, one hour ahead of EST.}

“I’m really pleased with where we are at the moment,” Ryan said. “We will face tough competition next in the Virgin Islands. We know what we have to to, and we’ll get it done.”
