RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – J.R. Reynolds scored 16 of his 23 points in the second half Tuesday night, including 10 in a 12-3 run that put Virginia in control for good, and the Cavaliers beat Richmond 59-43 in their second game under coach Dave Leitao.
The Cavaliers (2-0), who beat Liberty 79-44 in Leitao’s debut, also got 14 points from Sean Singletary and made impressive defensive adjustments for the second half that helped offset 18 turnovers that led to 22 points for the Spiders.
The Spiders (1-1), in their first season under coach Chris Mooney, followed a 44-40 victory against Hampton by again struggling on offense. They hit 7 of 15 3-point shots to trail just 26-25 at the break, but were 0-for-9 on 3s in the last 20 minutes.
Overall, Richmond shot 15-for-52, 28.8 percent.
Jermaine Bucknor led Richmond with 15 points.
The Cavaliers held Richmond without a point for the first 6:19 of the second half, but scored only seven points of their own during that period. After Bucknor broke the drought for Richmond, Singletary’s 3-pointer gave the Cavaliers a 36-27 lead.
After Leitao was whistled for a technical foul for the second consecutive game and the Spiders closed to within 36-31, Reynolds scored eight straight points to spark the big run for the visitors. The Spiders never really challenged again.
The Cavaliers also dominated inside, outrebounding the Spiders 39-24.
The Spiders trailed 14-5 after 11 1/2 minutes, then hit six 3-pointers over the next 7:14 to close to within 26-23 in the final minute. A buzzer-beating fast break basket by Jarhon Giddings made it a 26-25 game at intermission.
Richmond was 2-for-13 from inside the arc. Besides the layup, the Spiders’ other 2-pointer came on a goaltending call. Virginia shot 9-for-21 in the half.
