Cavaliers Win Third Straight Over VMI in "Battle on the Beltway", 29-6

FAIRFAX, Va. – – Freshman Brent Jones (Burke, Va.) posted the only fall and the Virginia Wrestling team won eight of the 10 bouts to defeat VMI, 29-6, Wednesday evening in the “Battle on the Beltway” at Robinson High School. Virginia (3-1) and VMI (1-3) had wrestled the last three times in Richmond for the “Rumble on the River”, before moving this year’s meet to Fairfax, where the Cavaliers won their third straight over the Keydets.
At 197 pounds, Jones, a 2005 graduate of Robinson High School, pinned VMI’s Niels Madsen at 1:58 to run his record to 11-5 in front of his home crowd.
Nick Alparone defeated VMI’s Jochen Granja, 9-5, at 141 pounds. VMI picked up a win at 149 pounds when Sam Alvarenga held off Drew DiPasquale, 10-3. The Keydets earned its second win of the meet when Tommy Cunningham moved to 13-5 on the season with a 4-1 win over Kyle Artusio at 157 pounds.
Mike Sewell, wrestling at 165 pounds for the first time this season, defeated Chris Hardy, 3-2.
Virginia returns to action this Saturday when the Cavaliers take part in the Virginia Intercollegiates at James Madison.
