TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of Virginia women’s basketball team opened Atlantic Coast Conference action with a 60-46 loss at Florida State on Sunday at the Tucker Center. The loss snapped UVa’s eight-game win streak.

Virginia fell to 11-2 overall and 0-1 in the ACC, while the Seminoles improved 10-5 overall and 1-1 in the ACC.

In the first half, poor shooting and sloppiness plagued UVa as FSU held the Cavaliers to a mere 13 points, their lowest first-half point total since 2004. (UVa had 12 first-half points at Maryland, 1-4-04). UVa shot 17 percent from the field and committed 11 turnovers. Junior Siedah Williams (Cleveland, Ohio) paced the Hoos with six points for the stanza. UVa entered the locker room down by 12 points, 25-13.

“We just couldn’t get anything going offensively in the first half,” said head coach Debbie Ryan. “Give Florida State credit for pushing us. Rebounding was key as well as us not being able to finish.”

In the second half, FS U opened up with a 12-1 to go ahead by 20 points, 40-20 with 15:5 on the clock. The Seminoles went up by as many as 22, but the Cavaliers came back with a 10-4 run to end the game.

Williams was the only Cavalier in double figures with 14 points. Senior Tiffany Sardin (Chicago, Ill.) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

Alicia Gladden paced FSU with 22 points. Ganiyat Adeduntan followed with 12 points.

Overall, Virginia out-rebounded Florida State, 53-47. The Cavaliers shot a season-low 24 percent from the field.

“I didn’t see this coming at all,” Ryan said. “We’ve been playing well.”

Virginia returns home to University Hall on Friday, Jan. 13 for a 7 p.m. game with NC State. The Regional Sports Network will televise the game.
