Virginia Wrestling Finishes 1-1 on Day One at Virginia Duals

Hampton, Va. – – Eric Albright, Damian Johnson, Kyle Narkiewicz and Brent Jones all went 2-0 on the day as the University of Virginia Wrestling Team finished 1-1 on the first day of the Virginia Duals at the Hampton Coliseum. The Cavaliers defeated North Dakota State, 22-12, in the consolation round. Drexel defeated UVa, 19-16 in first round action. The Cavaliers continued competition in the second round of the consolation bracket on Saturday.

Albright earned his second win on the day when he defeated North Dakota State’s Eric Sanders at 133 pounds, 2-0. Johnson had a 12-0 major decision win over NDSU’s Zach Molitar at 165 pounds.

Narkiewicz’s second win came when he defeated Matt Wetterling, 7-5, at 184 pounds. Jones edged North Dakota State’s Jacob Bryce, 3-2, in the 197 pound bout.

Peter Ferrara picked up Virginia’s only fall when he pinned David Cunningham of North Dakota State at 3:05 at 141 pounds. Drew DiPasquale won at 149 pounds when he defeated Gabriel Mooney, 9-5.

Drexel 19, Virginia 16
Albright, Johnson, Narkiewicz, Jones and Smith each registered wins, but the Dragons registered a major decision at 157 pounds and the only fall of the match at 149 pounds to edge Virginia, 19-16, in the first round of the Virginia Duals.

Albright at 133 pounds posted a 13-4 major decision win over Drexel’s Morgan Remillard. Johnson defeated Scott Hunter, 5-4, at 165 pounds before Narkiewicz started three straight wins for the Cavaliers. Narkiewicz at 184 pounds defeated Drexel’s Justin Terhune, 8-4, before Jones knocked off Jon Oplinger, 9-7. Nick Smith won the heavyweight bout with a 3-2 victory over Chris Cowen.

Chris Renninger pinned UVa’s Drew DiPasquale at 3:36 in the 149 match-up and Ryan Hluschak earned an 11-3 major decision over Mike Sewell at 157 pounds which proved to be the difference for Drexel.
