CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s tennis team continued play Sunday at the Virginia Women’s Tennis Invitational. The fourth-team event is the first competition at the new Virginia Indoor Tennis Stadium at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.

The Cavaliers opened play on Sunday by playing Alabama in doubles. Virginia took two of the three matches, winning at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions for the second consecutive day. Fourth-years Kristen James (Clifton, Va.) and Lori Stern (Ojai, Calif.) won 8-3 over Mari Muller and Andrea Brenes at No. 2, while Rachel DelPriore (Williamsville, N.Y.) and Caroline Hammond (Williamsburg, Va.) posted an 8-5 win at No. 3 over Melissa Day and Sofia Ayala. In the other doubles matchup, Wisconsin swept all three doubles matches from Purdue.

In the afternoon, the Cavaliers played Purdue in singles as the teams split the six matches. For the second consecutive day, the Cavaliers got their wins at the No. 4-6 positions. James won her match at No. 4, downing Mallory Voelker 6-1, 6-3. Hammond also won in straight sets for Virginia, defeating Brittany Minna 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6. Lindsey Pereira (Arlington, Texas) rallied for a three set victory at No. 5, defeating Anna Dzeva 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

“Today we had a very good effort across the board, which is what we are looking for,” said head coach Mark Guilbeau. “Although we were facing a good opponent in Purdue in singles, I think we also had a big obstacle in fitness. It was the second day of the tournament and we had to fight through it. However, we did win a match because of it, overall it is something we need to work on. I was also pleased with the good decisions we made on the court today and our team is doing a good job listening to what we are trying to have them do.”

The tournament concludes on Monday with play beginning at 8:30 a.m.
