On Tap This Week: The Cavaliers open the 2006 dual match season this week with a pair of matches against top 20 foes. The top ranked Cavaliers will visit No. 9 Pepperdine in the season opener Tuesday before visiting No. 20 USC on Wednesday.

Against The Waves: Tuesday’s match at Pepperdine is the second all-time meeting between the schools. Pepperdine won the only previous meeting, 4-3, in Malibu in February 1999.

Against The Trojans: Wednesday’s match at USC is the second all-time meeting between the schools. USC won the only previous meeting, 4-0, in a first round match of the 2001 NCAA Tournament in Oxford, Miss.

On Top To Start: The Cavaliers open the 2006 season ranked No. 1 in the nation in the preseason ITA rankings. It is the highest ranking in school history, breaking the previous record of No. 2 set last season. With the ranking, the Cavaliers become the first ever school from the ACC to be ranked No. 1 in men’s tennis.

No. 1 at Virginia: With the No. 1 preseason ranking, the men’s tennis team becomes the tenth Cavalier program to be ranked No. 1. Football, Field Hockey, Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer, Women’s Cross Country, Men’s Basketball, Women’s Basketball, Men’s Lacrosse, and Women’s Lacrosse have also earned No. 1 rankings.

Individual Rankings: Four Cavaliers singles players and four doubles teams are currently ranked by the ITA. Treat Huey is ranked a career-high No. 6, Somdev Devvarman is ranked No. 10, Marko Miklo is ranked No. 46, and Rylan Rizza is ranked No. 53. In doubles, Rizza and Darrin Cohen are No. 19, Cohen and Doug Stewart are No. 25, Devvarman and Huey are No. 35, and Eric Riley and Jarrett Chirico are No. 43.
