CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia dropped its third ACC home game with a 67-58 loss to Florida State on Sunday afternoon at University Hall.

The Cavaliers fell to 13-6 overall and 2-5 in ACC play, while the Seminoles improved to 12-7 overall and 3-3 in the conference.

“That was a good basketball game,” Florida State head coach Sue Semrau said. “Virginia rebounded the ball extremely well.”

“You have to give (FSU) a lot of credit,” Virginia head coach Debbie Ryan said. “We started off like gangbusters. But we had some bad shots tonight, for sure.”

In the first half, UVa jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead from a jumper and trey from junior Brenna McGuire (Winchester, Mass.) and a lay-up from junior Siedah Williams (Cleveland, Ohio). FSU responded with a 9-2 run to tie the game at 9-9. The Seminoles took over the lead on two free throws by LaQuinta Neeley and never looked back. FSU led at the break, 28-22.

In the second half, the Cavaliers pulled within one, 35-34, but couldn’t get over the hump. The Seminoles went ahead by as many as 13 points, 53-40, before settling for the nine-point win.

“We couldn’t get over the hump, and that was key,” Ryan added. “That’s where you have to be mentally stronger.”

Freshman Lyndra Littles (Washington, D.C.) came off the bench to pace UVa with 15 points. Williams finished with 12 points, while senior Tiffany Sardin (Chicago, Ill.) added nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore Sharneé Zoll (Marlboro, N.J.) dished out a game-high seven assists.

“I love Zoll’s intensity and leadership skills,” Semrau said. “Littles is a special player as a freshman to come in and do what she does.”

Holly Johnson paced FSU with 15 points, while Alicia Gladden followed with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Neely finished with 10 points.

Overall, Virginia out-rebounded Florida State, 41-39.

“You have to learn from it,” Williams said. “We’re going to bounce back from this. It takes times, but we’re going to do it.”

Virginia hosts intra-state rival Virginia Tech on Thursday, Feb. 2 in a 7 p.m. game at University Hall.
