Virginia Falls at #2 Duke, 88-65; Zoll Sets Sophomore Assists Record

DURHAM, N.C. – Sophomore point guard Sharnee Zoll (Marlboro, N.J.) scored a career-high 20 points and broke the sophomore assists record despite that the University of Virginia women’s basketball team dropped its fifth consecutive ACC game with an 88-65 loss at No. 2 Duke on Friday at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Virginia fell to 13-9 overall and 2-8 in the ACC, while the Blue Devils improved to 22-1 overall and 9-1 in the league.
“Duke’s a really, really explosive team,” head coach Debbie Ryan said. “We did a good job defensively on (Monique) Currie.”
In the first half, the Blue Devils went ahead by eight, 12-4. UVa came within four points twice before Duke utilized an 11-2 run to go ahead by 17 points, 34-17. The Blue Devils held a 12-point edge at halftime, 37-25.
In the second half, the Cavaliers opened up with back-to-back three-pointers by junior Brenna McGuire (Winchester, Mass.) and Zoll. Duke then went ahead by as many as 23 points. UVa cut the lead to 13 points, 78-65, but that’s as close as it would get.
“We just took it to them and kept attacking,” Zoll said of the scoring burst to open the second half. “We took advantage of our athleticism and hit some shots.”
Following Zoll, senior Tiffany Sardin (Chicago, Ill.) had 13 points, junior Siedah Williams (Cleveland, Ohio), added 11 points, and sophomore Takisha Granberry (Charlotte, N.C.) had 10.
Zoll now has 146 assists in 22 games this season, rewriting the school record for assists by a sophomore. The previous record was set by Tora Suber with 143 assists in 32 games in 1995.
“I love her,” Duke coach Gail Goestenkors said of Zoll, whom she coached last summer on the USA Basketball squad. “She’s a great player. She came out and really hit tonight. She’s a smart player. She coaches the floor and thinks through the game.”
Mistie Williams paced Duke with 16 points. Abby Waner came off the bench for 14, while Lindsey Harding added 12. UVa held leading scorer Monique Currie to just two points on the night.
“Virginia is a good team,” Williams said. “They’re tough nosed. They take teams to the distance.”
Overall, Duke out-rebounded Virginia, 46-26.
