PHILADELPHIA – The Virginia women’s tennis team suffered their first loss of the season, falling to No. 56 Penn 4-3 Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia. The Cavaliers swept all three doubles matches, but the Quakers rallied in singles for four victories to win the match.

All three doubles matches were tightly contested, but the Cavaliers (4-1) claimed all three. Fourth-years Lori Stern (Ojai, Calif.) and Kristen James (Clifton, Va.) won 8-4 at No. 2 doubles, while the teams of Douglas Wink (Greensboro, N.C.) and Rachel DelPriore at No. 1, and Lauren Bruch (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) at No. 3 won their matches by an 8-6 score.

The Quakers (3-0) rebounded in singles to capture four of the six matches. The Cavaliers got straight set wins from DelPriore at the No. 3 position and Stern at No. 4. However, the Quakers won in straight sets at No. 2 and No. 6 and won decisive third sets at No. 1 and No. 5 singles.

“Overall, we had a good weekend here at Penn,” said Virginia head coach Mark Guilbeau. “This loss hurts because we played well enough to win. The effort was there all weekend. We need to just play better and execute better, especially with some fundamentals. With the effort we had today, if we can execute a little better we can win matches like this. Give Penn a lot of credit, after getting swept in the doubles, they didn’t go away, kept fighting, and won the match.”

The Cavaliers return to action on Sunday, February 19 as they open ACC play at Virginia Tech. The match is worth one point in the Commonwealth Challenge, presented by Adelphia. Virginia currently leads the competition by a 10-4 margin. Sunday’s match starts at 1:00 p.m. at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg.
