Virginia Gets Back on Winning Track with 93-42 Victory over Longwood

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia got back on the winning track Tuesday night as the Cavaliers beat Longwood, 93-42, in non-conference action at University Hall.
The Cavaliers improved to 14-10 overall, while the Lancers fell to 9-16 overall. The win at home snapped a six-game losing streak and is UVa’s first home win in since Jan. 2.
“That’s the best thing about it is to just get back in the win column,” Virginia head coach Debbie Ryan said. “We have to carry this (momentum) into our next game.”
Virginia opened with a 15-0 run over the first five minutes of action. Ryan then pulled her starters. With three freshmen on the court, UVa continued to pull away, holding a 28-point edge, 53-25, at halftime.
In the second half, UVa held Longwood to just 17 points while steaming ahead to as many as 53 points, 91-38.
Freshman Lyndra Littles (Washington, D.C.) came off the bench for a career-high 20 points and 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Junior Siedah Williams (Cleveland, Ohio) added 16 points, including a perfect 4-for-4 from the line, and seven boards. Freshman Abby Robertson (Springfield, Va.) scored a career-high 13 points. Freshman Britnee Millner (Martinsville, Va.) also came off the bench for a career-high 12 points. Junior Tara McKnight (Bluffton, S.C.), who played a career-long 27 minutes, had a career-high five points, including a trey.
“They played with lots of energy tonight,” Ryan said of Millner and McKnight.
“It’s fun to be out there and help the team in another way,” said McKnight.
“I just wanted to give our team a spark,” MIllner said.
“It’s a good thing to be able to do this and see how she’s developed,” Ryan said of Millner. “It was great to see how cohesive we were with all the substitutions. We got a lot out of this game.”
Amber Mason paced Longwood with 13 points. Amber Sims added 10 points off the bench.
“I think the girls had fun out there,” said Longwood interim head coach Nikki Atkinson. “There’s always a chance to win; that’s why we play the game. We have small goals. A game like this is a time for learning.”
Overall, Virginia out-rebounded Longwood, 46-27.
Virginia travels to Wake Forest on Saturday, Feb. 18. Tip-off at the Lawrence Joel Memorial Coliseum is set for 3 p.m.
