Virginia Wrestling Defeats Maryland, 24-14

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – – Freshman Brent Jones posted the only fall of the meet at 197 pounds and the Virginia Wrestling Team rallied from a 14-12 deficit to earn a 24-14 victory over the Maryland Terrapins in Atlantic Coast Conference wrestling action Friday night at Memorial Gym. With the win, the Cavaliers (12-5, 4-1) tied Maryland for first place in the ACC at 4-1.
Virginia led 18-14 heading into the 197-pound bout. After Jones had a two-point takedown, he ended up pinning Maryland’s Jerry Afari in 37 seconds to earn his eighth fall of the season.
The Cavaliers won the final three bouts of the meet after falling behind 14-12. Mike Grogan regained the lead for the Cavaliers when he posted a takedown in the final period to earn a 4-2 win at 174 pounds as UVa led, 15-14. Kyle Narkiewicz followed with a 5-2 decision over Maryland’s Luke Stauffer to put UVa ahead, 18-14.
The Terrapins overcame a 12-0 deficit. After Nick Smith won by forfeit for the Cavaliers. Anthony Burke defeated Maryland’s James Knox, 8-2, at 125 pounds putting the Hoos ahead, 9-0. Eric Albright then won 6-2 over Brendan Byrne as the Cavaliers extended their lead to 12-0.
Maryland then rattled off 14 straight points. Alex Krom and Andrew Schlaffer each won by major decisions at 141 pounds and 149 pounds respectively. Adam James defeated UVa’s Mike Sewell at 157 pounds, 12-5, and Adam DeCosmo had a 9-4 decision over UVa’s Damian Johnson giving Maryland the 14-12 lead.
The Cavaliers now await the ACC Championships which is a part of Mat Jam 2006 hosted by VMI in Lexington, Va. Mat Jam 2006 is where the ACC Championship and Southern Conference Championship will be awarded. The championships are scheduled for Mar. 4.
