Cavaliers Climb to Fourth at Papa Johns Collegiate

Miami Lakes, FL – The 13th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team moved up four spots to fourth place entering Tuesday’s final round of play at the Papa John’s Collegiate Championship held at Don Shula’s Golf Club in Miami Lakes, Fla.
Virginia shot 10-over 298 during the second round for a two-day total of 605. The Cavaliers are eight strokes behind North Carolina State for the team lead.
NCAA runner-up Leah Wigger continued to pace the Cavaliers with her second consecutive round of 1-over 73. She enters the final 18 holes three strokes off the lead and tied for second at 2-over 146. South Florida’s Christina Jones stands atop the leaderboard at 143 following rounds of 72 and 71.
Virginia’s Lauren Mielbrecht also shot 73 Monday to stand 19th overall at 8-over 152. She opened play with a 79. Jennie Arseneault carded a 5-over 77 to move into 27th position at 153. Rachel Smith posted a 79 to finish at 158, tied with teammate Carly Truitt for 44th. Truitt shot 75 Monday after opening play with an 83.
Sally Shonk, who is playing as an individual, is 19th at 152. She finished at 5-over 77 during the second round.
N.C. State rebounded to take the overall lead at 597. The Wolfpack posted the day’s low round with a 1-under 287 after shooting 310 to start the event. East Carolina is second at 599 followed by Miami at 604. South Florida is tied with Virginia for fourth place. The College of Charleston, which led after Sunday’s first round, dropped back to seventh in the 12-team field.
The third and final round of the tournament will take place Tuesday morning.
