Charlottesville – The Virginia athletics program has the opportunity this weekend to clinch the inaugural Commonwealth Challenge, presented by Adelphia. The Commonwealth Challenge is a point-based competition involving the athletic programs at Virginia and Virginia Tech.

Currently, Virginia leads in the all-sports competition by an 11-4 margin. This weekend will see the two schools compete at the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships in Blacksburg. The championships conclude Saturday. If either the UVa men’s or women’s programs finish ahead of their Hokie counterparts, they will clinch the Commonwealth Challenge trophy for Virginia. The competition is worth .5 points for both the men and women.

The Commonwealth Challenge is a comprehensive competition involving teams in the two schools’ athletics programs. With Adelphia’s support, it is designed to increase the exposure and interest level in the various sports, while promoting good sportsmanship among student-athletes, coaches and fans of the schools. A point system determines the annual winner of the competition, with 22 total points available this season as the schools compete in 21 sports.

A trophy featuring a combination of the red brick prevalent at the University of Virginia and the limestone at Virginia Tech goes to the school winning the overall competition each year. The trophy will be presented at the Commonwealth Day football game between the two schools the following fall. There are also traveling plaques for the winning team in each sport.
