CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s tennis team improved to 10-5 on the season by sweeping a pair of matches Friday at the Indoor Tennis Stadium at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. In the first match of the day, the Cavaliers opened up ACC play with a 6-1 win over Boston College. In the nightcap, Virginia downed intrastate rival Old Dominion 5-2.

In the afternoon match, the Cavaliers downed Boston College for their 18th consecutive win against an ACC opponent. Virginia took a 1-0 lead by sweeping the doubles matches. The team of Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.) and Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.) won at No. 1 before Jarrett Chirico (Sarasota, Fla.) and Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) clinched the point at No. 2 doubles. Stephen Rozek (Chardon, Ohio) and Nick Meythaler (Owensboro, Ky.) completed the sweep with a win at No. 3 doubles.

In singles, the Cavaliers won the first five matches off the courts in straight sets to take a 6-0 lead before the Eagles took the final match. Stewart, Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia), Chirico, and Rozek all posted singles wins for the Cavaliers.

In the second match of the day, Virginia defeated Old Dominion for their ninth consecutive win against an opponent from the commonwealth. In doubles, Chirico and Devvarman cruised to a win at No. 3 doubles before Old Dominion won at the No. 2 position. Rizza and Meythaler clinched the opening point for the Cavaliers with their win at No. 1 doubles.

In singles, the Cavaliers extended their lead to 3-0 with straight set wins by Chirico and Cohen. After the Monarchs cut the lead to 3-1, Devvarman clinched the win with his win at No. 3 singles. Miklo concluded the match by rallying for a third set superbreaker win at No. 4 to make the final score 5-2.

The Cavaliers will have nearly one month off before returning to action on March 22 as they visit Virginia Tech. Virginia returns home in one month, as the Cavaliers host Wake Forest on March 24 at the Snyder Tennis Center.
