CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s tennis team suffered its second loss of the season, falling to No. 25 VCU 6-1 Saturday afternoon at the Indoor Tennis Stadium at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The Cavaliers fall to 6-2 on the season with the loss, while the Rams improve to 13-0.

The Rams took the early 1-0 lead by taking the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, the team of Kristen James (Clifton, Va.) and Lori Stern (Ojai, Calif.) defeated Vera Petrashevitch and Tatsiana Uvarova in a tiebreaker, 8-7.

The Cavaliers started singles strong, winning the first set in four of the six matches. However, Virginia was able to win only one of those matches, as Lindsey Pereira (Arlington, Texas) defeated Petrashevitch 6-2, 7-5 at No. 5 singles. The Rams won in straight sets at No. 1 and No. 6 singles, and rallied for three set wins at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 singles.

“It was a very good match against a very good VCU team,” said Virginia head coach Mark Guilbeau. “I think we played well enough to win a few more matches, or even the dual match. If we keep progressing and playing hard, it should lead to good results. We are very optimistic that the team is learning and concentrating on using their experiences they are having to further their level.”

The Cavaliers close out their three-match homestand Sunday, as they host No. 19 William & Mary. Match time at the Indoor Tennis Stadium at Boar’s Head is 2:00 p.m.
