Cavaliers Pound Out 23 Hits in 21-0 Shutout of Saint Joseph's

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – – Mike Ballard and Josh Myers combined for a six-hit shutout and junior right fielder Tim Henry drove in six runs going 4-for-7 at the plate as Virginia routed Saint Joseph’s, 21-0, Friday evening in the first game of a three-game nonconference series at Davenport Field. The Cavaliers (10-2) pounded out 23 hits, which were the most hits by a Virginia team under Brian O’Connor. Virginia had 22 hits in a 17-1 win over Central Connecticut in 2004. The 21 runs also were the most since UVa defeated Virginia Tech, 21-10, on April 21, 2004.
“I was very pleased with our offensive approach today,” O’Connor said. “We came out hitting the ball and maintained that approach throughout the game, which was something I thought we didn’t do against George Washington in the late innings. Mike (Ballard) gave us another great outing on the mound, which was nice to see as he gets himself ready for ACC play next weekend.”
Henry’s six RBI was the most by a Cavalier, since Mark Reynolds drove in six at Wake Forest on April 26, 2003. Henry added two doubles in the game. Ballard (3-0) tossed seven innings, scattered five hits and struck out six batters. Myers pitched the final two innings, allowed one hit and struck out three.
Sean Doolittle and Brandon Marsh each went 3-for-4 with Doolittle driving in three runs. Brandon Guyer was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and one RBI while Beau Seabury finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Mike Campagna went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI while Mike Mitchell also added two hits.
Virginia took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Seabury’s squeeze bunt scored the first run of the game. After an RBI single by Mitchell made it 2-0, Henry’s double down the left field line scored two runs giving the Hoos a 4-0 lead. Doolittle’s RBI single scored Henry for the final run of the inning.
Guyer scored a Cavalier run in the bottom of the third after Seabury’s base-hit to left field as UVa led, 6-0.
Henry’s second hit of the fourth inning highlighted a seven-hit, seven-run inning for the Cavaliers. With Virginia leading 10-0, he singled down the left field line to score Campagna and Seabury to make it, 12-0. Doolittle drove in Henry as UVa led, 13-0 after four innings.
The Cavaliers scored four more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Henry doubled to right center to score Mitchell and Campagna. Doolittle then doubled in his third run of the game and Guyer singled in Doolittle for a 17-0 lead.
Virginia plated its final four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Campagna’s base-hit scored Matt Bernstine and Tom Hagan delivered a two-run single to left center. John Scaglione’s RBI single through the right side scored Mitchell for the final run of the game.
Hagan, David Adams, Scaglione, Bernstine and Greg Miclat each added one hit for the Cavaliers.
Mike Blahusch led Saint Joseph’s (0-8) at the plate going 2-for-4. Jason Hessler (0-3) suffered the loss as he allowed six earned runs on 10 hits and struck out three.
Virginia and Saint Joseph’s continue their series Saturday at 4 p.m. Freshman right-hander Jacob Thompson (3-0) takes the mound for UVa.
