CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – – Ryan Hudson drove in four runs in a 4-for-4 performance at the plate including a three-run home run in his first start of the season and Sean Doolittle struck out five to earn his third win as Virginia completed the series sweep of Saint Joseph’s, 14-3, Sunday afternoon at Davenport Field at UVa Baseball Stadium. Greg Miclat went 3-for-4 with four RBI while Doolittle also went 2-for-5 with two RBI as the Cavaliers (12-2) delivered 17 hits in helping UVa to its second best start under head coach Brian O’Connor.
“We had a good offensive weekend at the plate. Our guys found the holes in the defense, put hits together and scored runs,” O’Connor said. “We were able to play a lot of guys at different positions and see what they could do. Our three starting pitchers had good outings and we were able to get a lot of our other pitchers some work. It was a very productive weekend to help us get ready for next week and the start of ACC play.”
Hudson, making his first start of the season behind the plate, hit the first home run of the season by a Cavalier at Davenport Field in the bottom of the eighth. He also had a run-scoring double. Brandon Marsh, Tom Hagan and Brandon Guyer each recorded two hits.
Doolittle (3-0) started the game for the Cavaliers and pitched three-scoreless and hitless innings while recording the five strikeouts. Shooter Hunt pitched two scoreless innings while Allie Swanson also added one scoreless inning. Alex Smith, Michael Schwimer and Casey Lambert combined for the other three innings. Lambert struck out three in one inning of work.
Jereme Scott led the Hawks (0-10) at the plate going 2-for-4 with one RBI. Bob Unkel (0-2) took the loss for Saint Joseph’s allowing six runs on nine hits in five innings.
The Cavaliers scored one run in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead. Doolittle’s RBI single through the right side scored Mitchell in the first. Miclat singled to right field to score Hudson in the bottom of the second and Guyer’s triple scored Marsh in the bottom of the third.
Virginia pushed its lead to 6-0 after a three-run fourth inning. Miclat drove in Hudson again to make it 5-0. Marsh doubled in Miclat and Doolittle hit his second RBI single to score Marsh.
The Cavaliers added an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth when Marsh scored on an error.
Saint Joseph’s pulled within 7-2 in the top of the seventh when Mike Gentile’s base hit scored Adriano Petrutz. Scott then singled in Greg Mason, who reached on a fielder’s choice. UVa then plated four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Hudson doubled in Hagan, who hit a lead-off double. After Mike Campagna was hit by a pitch, Miclat tripled in two runs extending the lead to 10-2. Mike Mitchell’s sacrifice fly made it 11-2 at the end of seven innings.
Hudson delivered his three-run blast in the bottom of the eighth after Tim Henry and Hagan both singled to get on base. The Hawks scored a run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single from Jeremy Jakubowski.
Henry and Campagna both had one hit for the Hoos.
Virginia will wrap up its six-game home-stand when the Cavaliers host Maryland Eastern-Shore for a doubleheader Tuesday beginning at 2 p.m. The second game will follow 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
