Tallahasee, FL – Thanks to an eighth-place finish by junior Eamonn McLoughlin, the Virginia men’s golf team placed eighth at Florida State’s Seminole Intercollegiate. It was the team’s first event of the spring season.

Virginia shot 4-over 292 during Tuesday’s final round for a 54-hole total of 12-over 876. Coastal Carolina took advantage of a poor final-round by 11th-ranked East Tennessee State to grab the championship with a 13-under score of 851. The Buccaneers led after the first two rounds before shooting 13-over 301 Tuesday to fade to fourth.

McLoughlin’s performance was his best collegiate finish, topping the 12th-place showing he had as a freshman at the Furman Invitational. In three tournaments last fall McLoughlin did not finish higher than 47th. His 2-under 214 marked the best tournament score in his career and was 10 shots better than any of his three outings last fall. His 1-under 71 was the Hoos’ best final-round score.

Andrea Signor posted the Cavaliers’ second best score at 2-over 218 to finish 19th. Brad Tiley was 25th at 219 and Conrad Von Borsig placed 44th at 225. Daniel Kefale rounded out UVa’s scoring with a 228 to place 52nd.

NC State’s Stephen Lewton won a playoff against Coastal Carolina’s Dustin Johnson for medalist honors. Lewton shot 5-under 67 during the final round to tie Johnson at 13-under 206. North Carolina’s Martin Ureta was third at 207.

The Cavaliers return to the links March 12-13 for the Jim Hackler Invitational played in Myrtle Beach.
