Columbia, SC – The 17th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team is two shots off the lead following the first round of play at South Carolina’s Lady Gamecock Classic. Led by a pair of 2-over scores of 74 by Leah Wigger and Jennie Arseneault, the Cavaliers shot 14-over 302. They are tied with Florida State for third place, two strokes behind 14th-ranked Tennessee and one shot behind Furman.

Only five strokes separate the first seven teams in the standings. NC State is one shot behind the Cavaliers and sixth-ranked Auburn is in sixth-place at 304 while 11th-ranked Wake Forest sits in seventh place at 305.

The battle for medalist honors is just as tight. Florida State’s Caroline Westrup carded a 2-under 70 to claim the first-round lead. NC State’s Lorraine Ballerano is alone in second place at 71 while Tennessee’s Gold Johansson and Auburn’s Maria Martinez are tied for third at 72. Wigger and Arseneault share sixth place with four other players who managed a 74.

UVa’s Carly Truitt is one shot behind her teammates in 12th place while Rachel Smith shot 79 to round out the Cavaliers’ scoring and is in 37th position. Lauren Mielbrecht had an off day, posting a 83 to finish 51st.

Wigger’s round included a pair of birdies to go with four bogies, including two during her final three holes. Arseneault managed to birdie the 18th hole after suffering through a double-bogie, bogie combination on the 15th and 16th holes. Truitt had an up-and-down round that included five birdies on her way to posting a 3-over 75. After a birdie on No. 10 she stood at 1-under before shooting 4-over during her next three holes. Back-to-back birdies brought her back to 1-over before a double-bogie on No. 16 left her at 3-over.

The second round of the 54-hole event will take place Saturday at South Carolina’s University Club. The final round is slated for Sunday.
