CLEMSON, S.C. – The Virginia women’s tennis team suffered its first conference loss of the season, falling to No. 29 Clemson 5-2 Saturday afternoon at the Clemson Indoor Tennis Facility. The Cavaliers fall to 6-4 (1-1 ACC) with the loss while the Tigers improve to 6-4 (1-1).

The Cavaliers took the early 1-0 lead by taking the doubles point. The team of Douglas Wink (Greensboro, N.C.) and Rachel DelPriore (Williamsville, N.Y.) upset the No. 40 ranked team of Daniela Alvarez and Alexandra Luc 8-5 at No. 2 doubles. The duo of Caroline Hammond (Williamsburg, Va.) and Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) then clinched the opening point for the Cavaliers with their 8-6 win over Maria Brito and Marie Scriba at the No. 3 position.

In singles, the Tigers rallied to take a 2-1 lead with straight set wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Clemson extended its lead to 3-1 as Brito rallied in the third set to defeat Lori Stern (Ojai, Calif.) at No. 4 singles. The Tigers then clinched the match as Carol Salge defeated DelPriore 6-7, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3 singles. Clemson added a win at No. 5 singles, before Rales closed out the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Scriba at No. 6 singles.

The Cavaliers continue their road trip on Sunday as they visit Georgia Tech. Match time in Atlanta is 11:00 a.m.
