UVa Golfers Remain Third at Lady Gamecock Classic

Columbia, SC – The 17th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team turned in its best single-round score of the season to stay in third place after the second round of South Carolina’s Lady Gamecock Classic. Led by Rachel Smith and Leah Wigger’s 1-under scores of 71, the Cavaliers shot 1-over 289.

Virginia’s 36-hole total of 591 is three shots behind second place Tennessee and nine strokes off sixth-ranked Auburn’s tournament-leading 582. The Lady Tigers shot a blistering 10-under 278 to move up from sixth place and grab the tournament lead.

Wigger’s 71 marked the fourth time this season she has posted a number under par. Smith’s 71 was her best score of the season. Tied for sixth at 1-over 145, Wigger enters the final round looking to post her sixth top-10 finish in seven outings this year.

Freshman Jennie Arseneault shot 73 Saturday to stand ninth at 147. Smith’s score moved her up to 21st at 150. Carly Truitt posted a 77 for a two-day total of 152 to land in 28th place. Lauren Mielbrecht shot 74 after opening with an 83 and is 45th at 157.

Auburn’s Maria Martinez, the nation’s third-ranked player, owns a two-shot lead in the individual stroke play at 3-under 141. She carded a 4-under 68 during the second round. Tennessee’s Nicole Smith and Auburn’s Nicole Hage are tied for second at 143.

The final round will start at 9 a.m. Sunday with a shotgun start. Live scoring of the tournament is on the Internet at Golfstat.com.
