CHARLOTTESVILLE – The University of Virginia men’s basketball team plays at Stanford University on Tuesday (March 14) in the opening round of the 2006 National Invitation Tournament (NIT). The game is scheduled to begin at 9:30 p.m. Eastern time.

Virginia enters the game with an overall record of 15-14, while Stanford is 15-13 on the season. The schools have met four times in men’s basketball with Stanford leading the series 3-1. Stanford won at home 74-60 during the 1991-92 season and 84-72 during the 1993-94 season. Virginia won at University Hall 72-48 during the 1992-93 season and lost at home 64-60 during the 1994-95 season.

The winner of Tuesday’s game advances to play at Missouri State (20-8) on March 17.

The invitation is the 12th for UVa to the NIT. Virginia last participated in the tournament in 2004. The Cavaliers have compiled an overall record of 15-9 in the NIT and won the tournament championship in 1980 and 1992.
