FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The University of Virginia women’s basketball team has been invited to the 2006 Women’s National Invitation Tournament, the WNIT announced late on Monday evening.

The Cavaliers (18-11) will host St. Joseph’s (20-10) in first round action on Saturday, March 18 at University Hall in Charlottesville. Tip-off time will be announced on Tuesday, March 14.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for youth (aged 18 and younger), students of participating institutions, and senior citizens.

Second round action runs from March 19-21.

The 2006 WNIT field has 40 teams for the first time in the tourney’s history. The top eight seeded teams in the single-elimination tournament receive a bye.

The postseason appearance is Virginia’s 24th since the school started sponsoring women’s basketball in 1974. UVa has appeared in 21 NCAA tournaments, the 1981 AIAW tournament, and the 1980 WNIT. In the `Hoos prior WNIT, UVa beat Wayland Baptist (67-62) in first round action before falling to North Carolina (68-61) in the second round and Drake (67-53) in the semifinal.
