CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – – Pat McAnaney, Andrew Carraway and Josh Myers combined for a seven-hit shutout and Sean Doolittle finished 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs as No. 21 Virginia blanked Marshall, 12-0,Wednesday evening in nonconference baseball action at Davenport Field at the UVa Baseball Stadium. The Cavaliers won their 20th game of the season as they improved to 20-4 on the season while Marshall fell to 8-8. Brandon Guyer and Brandon Marsh each added a pair of hits for the Cavaliers, who finished with 12 hits in the game.
“I know the past the couple of days had been a little hectic for us after canceling a game and trying to find another team to come in here and play us. We handled it very well as team. Our guys continued to hit well and had good at-bats,” UVa head coach Brian O’Connor said. “Pat (McAnaney) started off the season a little rough, but he’s settling back into his old form. He threw strikes tonight, which is something he’s been doing well. He had a nice outing for us, which is what we needed from him to keep our team going as we get ready for Wake Forest this weekend.”
McAnaney (3-1), who has 29 strikeouts in 24 2/3 innings this season, struck out five in five innings in picking up his third win of the season. He held Marshall to five hits. Carraway tossed three scoreless innings while Myers pitched the final inning for UVa, who extended its home winning streak to 15 games.
Marshall’s Adam Dobies, brother of former Cavalier pitcher Andrew Dobies, suffered the loss for UVa, as he allowed eight runs on nine hits in three innings. He struck out two batters. Roddy Stieger and Nick Wolle each had two hits for the Thundering Herd.
The Cavaliers put up four runs in the bottom of the first. Marsh doubled with one out and scored on Doolittle’s single up the middle putting UVa ahead, 1-0. After the Cavaliers loaded the bases, Tom Hagan singled through the left side to bring in two more runs as UVa led, 3-0. Guyer then scored on a wild pitch to make it, 4-0.
Virginia scored two more runs in the bottom of the second. Marsh singled and moved to third on Doolittle’s double off the right field wall. David Adams reached on an error scoring Marsh for a 5-0 UVa lead. Doolittle scored on Marshall’s second error of the inning to extend the score to 6-0.
Guyer’s two-run double in the bottom of the fourth made it, 8-0. Virginia scratched across another run in the bottom of the fifth when Greg Miclat scored when Doolittle hit into a fielder’s choice scoring Miclat for a 9-0 lead.
Ryan Hudson’s second home run of the season and second home run at Davenport Field gave the Hoos a 12-0 lead. He sent a 1-2 pitch over the left field wall to bring in three runs for the Cavaliers.
Tim Henry, Adams, Hagan and Hudson each added one hit. Guyer and Hagan each had two RBIs while Hudson had three RBIs.
Virginia continues its home-stand when they host Atlantic Coast Conference foe Wake Forest this weekend. Friday’s first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. while Saturday’s game is scheduled for 4 p.m. Sunday’s game is at 1 p.m.
