CHARLOTTESVILLE – In a matchup of two of the three undefeated teams in ACC play, the No. 11 Virginia Cavaliers defeated No. 31 Wake Forest 6-1 Friday afternoon at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Cavaliers improve to 12-5 on the season, 3-0 in the conference with the win, while the Demon Deacons fall to 9-5 overall, 2-1 in the ACC.

The Cavaliers opened the match by taking the doubles point for a 1-0 lead. The No. 55 ranked team of Nick Meythaler (Owensboro, Ky.) and Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) got the Cavaliers started with an 8-3 win over Todd Paul and Andrew Hamar at No. 1 doubles. The No. 18 ranked duo of Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) and Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) clinched the opening point for the Cavaliers with their 8-6 win over Cory Parr and Mariusz Adamski at the No. 2 position.

In singles, the Cavaliers extended their lead to 2-0 as No. 9 ranked Devvarman downed No. 69 ranked Hamar 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Wake Forest got a point at No. 1 singles where No. 15 ranked Paul defeated No. 77 ranked Doug Stewart 6-3, 6-4. Rizza extended the lead to 3-1 with his 6-3, 6-2 win over Parr at No. 3 singles. Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.) clinched the win for Virginia with his 6-1, 7-6 win over Liron Strauss at the No. 6 position. Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) scored a 6-0, 6-2 win over Adamski to make the score 5-1 before Huey closed out the match with a 7-5, 7-6 win over Brett Ross in the final match on the courts.

The win extends the Cavaliers’ conference winning streak to 14 consecutive ACC regular season matches and 20 ACC matches overall. The win was also Virginia’s eighth consecutive ACC home win.

“I believe we are continuing to get better each and every match,” said Virginia head coach Brian Boland. “We are looking forward to Sunday when we take on a tough N.C. State team.”

The Cavaliers will return to action on Sunday, as they host No. 29 N.C. State. Match time at the Snyder Tennis Center is 1:00 p.m.
