REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – The University of Virginia women’s rowing team won its varsity eight and second varsity eight competitions against Stanford University on Saturday, March 25, at the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic. The regatta, which features more than 100 crew races, is held on the 2,000 meter Redwood Shores course in Redwood City, Calif.

The Cavaliers won the varsity eight race with a time of 7:15.41. Stanford led early, but Virginia took the lead during the second 500 meters of the race and led the rest of the way. Stanford finished with a time of 7:21.49.

Virginia’s varsity eight boat was comprised of Michelle Ellison (coxswain), Libby McCann, Kerry Maher, Andria Haneman, Ashley Jones, Heather Gardner, Sara Lippa, Melanie Kok, and Chrissie Monaghan.

In the second varsity eight competition, Virginia’s boat led the entire race, winning the event with a time of 7:54.27. Stanford finished the race in 8:15.43.

Caitlin Mixter (coxswain), Renee Albers, Mindy Fiesler, Bridget Fowler, Katrin Sydlik, Kelsie Chaudoin, Crystal MacLeod, Anna Samaha, and Mieke Pitts manned Virginia’s second varsity eight boat.

The Cavaliers are scheduled to compete later Saturday afternoon against Oregon State and will race against California on Sunday, March 26, the second and final day of the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic.
