REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – The University of Virginia women’s rowing team won its varsity eight and second varsity eight races against Oregon State on Saturday, March 25, at the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic. Virginia rowers also competed against the University of California-Berkley on Sunday, March 26, winning the second varsity eight event but losing the varsity eight competition. The regatta was held on the Redwood Shores course in Redwood City, Calif.

In late competition on Saturday, March 25, Virginia’s varsity eight boat finished with a time of 7:22.1 to defeat Oregon State (7:31.9). UVa also won the second varsity eight event against Oregon State with a time of 7:06.3. The Beavers finished with a time of 7:29.5.

On Sunday, March 26, Virginia defeated California in the second varsity eight competition with a time of 6:36.2. California led early, but fell behind the Cavaliers during the second 500 meters of the course to finish with a time of 6:39.2. In the varsity eight race, California had a time of 6:31.24 and UVa finished in 6:42.11.

Virginia’s varsity eight, ranked third in the nation in the US Rowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association NCAA Division I Varsity Eights preseason poll, defeated and lost to ranked crews at the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic. UVa defeated Stanford University (15th) and lost to the University of California-Berkeley (2nd).

Michelle Ellison (coxswain), Libby McCann, Kerry Maher, Andria Haneman, Ashley Jones, Heather Gardner, Sara Lippa, Melanie Kok, and Chrissie Monaghan manned Virginia’s varsity eight boat.

Virginia’s second varsity eight boat was comprised of Caitlin Mixter (coxswain), Renee Albers, Mindy Fiesler, Bridget Fowler, Katrin Sydlik, Kelsie Chaudoin, Crystal MacLeod, Anna Samaha, and Mieke Pitts.

The next regatta for the UVa women’s rowing team is scheduled for Saturday, April 1, when Virginia travels to Columbus, Ohio to race in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge against Ohio State and Michigan.
