CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Tom Hagan drove in five runs while going 4-for-4 and Josh Myers, Andrew Carraway, Alex Smith and Nick Cruit combined for the second one-hitter of the season as No. 14 Virginia routed Coppin State, 12-1, Tuesday evening at Davenport Field at the UVa Baseball Stadium. David Adams and John Scaglione each added a pair of hits for the Cavaliers (23-5), who continued their best start in program history. Virginia one-hit Saint Joseph’s on Mar. 4, in a 15-1 win.

“This was the first of five games this week and we needed to start the week off right. Early on, we didn’t play our best baseball, but we managed to settle down. Our pitching has been good all season. We just needed to score runs and play defense the way we do,” UVa head baseball coach Brian O’Connor said. “It’s important to stay focused and play your style of baseball in mid-week games especially before big conference weekends. We’re going to have to be prepared to do that as well tomorrow.”

Adams ended up 2-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI while Scaglione was 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Myers (2-1) tossed six innings and recorded four strikeouts in picking up his second win of the season. He still has not allowed an earned run in 13 innings. Carraway, Smith and Cruit each struck out two batters in each of the last three innings. Jesus Melendez (0-2) took the loss for the Eagles as he surrendered seven runs, three earned, on seven hits in five innings. He had three strikeouts. Matt Mansfield had the only hit for the Eagles in the game.

Virginia used a three-run bottom of the second to go ahead, 3-1. Adams was hit by a pitch and Brandon Guyer reached on an error. Hagan’s bunt single loaded the bases. Jeremy Farrell grounded out into a double play, but Adams scored tying the game, 1-1. Ryan Hudson then doubled in Guyer to make it, 2-1. Scaglione’s base-hit up the middle scored Hudson for the two-run UVa lead.

Hagan’s second base-hit of the game scored Guyer in the bottom of the fourth as the Cavaliers led, 4-1. Virginia added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Adams drove in Greg Miclat to make it, 6-1. Hagan’s two-run single then gave UVa a 7-1 lead in the fifth.

Brandon Marsh’s sacrifice fly and a run-scoring single from Sean Doolittle put the Hoos ahead, 9-1, in the bottom of the sixth. The Cavaliers scratched across three more runs in the bottom of the eighth. Matt Bernstine singled in a run and Hagan doubled into two more runs giving the Hoos the 12-1 advantage.

Coppin State capitalized on two Virginia errors in the top of the first to go ahead, 1-0. Amiel Traynum scored when Ryan Deakyne hit into a fielder’s choice and a Virginia error allowed the run to score giving the Eagles the lead early.

Virginia concludes its 10-game home-stand Wednesday when UVa faces Norfolk State at 5 p.m. Sophomore lefty Pat McAnaney (3-1, 4.01 ERA) will make his fifth start of the season.
